Water Main Fall Flushing Begins October 10

WATER DISTRIBUTION
FALL FLUSHING SCHEDULE
STARTS OCTOBER 10, 2007

Concord Public Works will perform seasonal water main flushing activities starting the week of October 8, 2007.  Routine flushing is required to maintain and improve water quality throughout the distribution system.  Most importantly, it allows sediment built up in the water mains, especially dead ends and low flow areas, to work its way out of the system.  This reduces the potential for discoloration and sediment in customer's homes.

If flushing or flow testing activities occur within your neighborhood, you should refrain from using unnecessary water during this time. This will reduce your chance of inadvertently drawing sediment into your service line. The following recommendations are provided to help minimize any associated inconvenience.

1.      Collect drinking water from your tap before we conduct flushing activities in your neighborhood.
2.      If we have completed our flushing exercise and you notice sediment in your service, run a cold water tap without the aeration screen for five-to-ten minutes. This should remove residual sediment from inside your service.
3.      If you note discoloration within your hot water system exclusively, you may need to purge your hot water tank. Sediment accumulates inside these tanks over time. Refer to your owner's manual for the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.  CPW recommends doing this twice a year to prevent build-up.  This will also help save energy and prolong the life of your tank!
4.      If discoloration persists, contact the CPW Water and Sewer Division (978-318-3250) for further assistance.

The flushing schedule, listed below, identifies general areas and times targeted for flushing, not each individual street.  A map highlighting areas to be flushed is available on our website www.concordma.gov/cpw.  Please note that water quality disturbances caused when flushing are not always limited to these specific areas.  You may also experience lower water pressure during the flushing activities.  When the flushing is complete, the water pressure should return to normal.
