Town Finances

Financially, the Town continues to be in excellent condition. Taxes have risen significantly in the past several years. Town officials recognize that this trend is taking a toll on those residents who are struggling to make ends meet. A significant increase in "local aid" from the Commonwealth helped balance the budget in 2006 and creates the opportunity of avoiding an operating budget "override" in 2007. Efforts were made in a variety of areas to reduce the impact of property taxes, including seeking donations for various capital projects, raising fees that are paid by those who use specific Town services, and seeking grants to fund some departmental activities. Nevertheless, the Town continues to rely on the local property tax for nearly 85% of its operating income.
