Current Issues at the NMI/StarMet superfund site at 2229 Main Street
BUILDING REMOVAL:  EPA has taken possession of the StarMet property at 2229 Main Street and the buildings are being cleaned out in anticipation of removing them next year.  Currently the buildings and contaminated areas are surrounded by fences and have 24 hour security  (Click here for more information about the building removal)
SITEWIDE CLEANUP: Contractor demaximus Inc. is developing a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS) for the cleanup of the site.   A draft of this study is under review by the EPA and summaries of the cleanup options have been made available for review.  Both the Committee and the Concord Board of Selectmen have commented to EPA our desire that EPA select a remediation alternative that meets residential standards and allows for the least restricted future uses of the alternative that meets residential standards and allows for the least restricted future uses of the site.(Board of Selectmen stakeholder letter to the EPA 9/23/13)
Before any final decisions are made about the sitewide cleanup, EPA will release the completed RI/FS for public comment and host a public meeting - hopefully in early 2014.
2229 MAIN STREET OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES: Committee members meet bi-monthly with EPA to discuss technical aspects of the cleanup and develop comments.  Historical information can be found in the committee’s annual reports.

The 2229 Main Street Oversight Committee consists of seven members:
  • Five  members appointed by the Board of Selectmen
  • One member chosen by the Board of Health
  • One member chosen by the Natural Resources Committee

The 2229 Main Street Oversight Committee was formed to monitor the process leading to the cleanup at Starmet, formerly Nuclear Metals, Inc. (NMI), a former defense contractor that is now a superfund site.
