RAIN BARRELS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Have you ever wondered how much water runs off your roof? During a typical moderate storm, over 700 gallons of water will run off the average roof, an area of about 1,200 square feet. That same roof will shed over 5,000 gallons of water from April to August.
Tap into this free water source by hooking up rain barrels to your downspouts. Concord Public Works is offering 55-gallon rain barrels to Concord water customers at a discounted price.
Rain barrels allow you to collect water with no added chemicals to water your plants, flowers and gardens. In fact, most plants prefer soft, untreated rain water over cold tap water treated for drinking. Since the average roof will shed over 5,000 gallons of water during the summer months, this is an excellent way to conserve water.
The rain barrels are made from ”recycled” barrels. They are retrofitted with a removable opening that is screened to keep insects and debris out. There is a spigot near the bottom to allow you to connect a hose to send water to your gardens or flowers, and an overflow hose near the top. Multiple barrels can be linked for additional capacity. Connector kits can be purchased from the rain barrel vendor.
