2011 Roads Program

The Town in conjunction with the contractor, Lazaro Paving, is pleased to announce the 2011-12 Roads Improvement Program is underway.  The streets to be improved under this contract include:

•       Thoreau Street (from Sudbury Road to Walden Street)
•       Whittemore Street
•       Union Street
•       Willow Street
•       Fielding Street
•       Hubbard Street (from Thoreau St to Union St)
•       Central Street (from Derby St to Pine St.)
•       Riverside Avenue (from Derby St to Pine St.)
•       Derby Street

2011 Roads Program –
Project contractor Lazaro Paving began project construction in early September.   The overall project scope included reclamation treatments on Whittemore Street (coordinated with water/sewer, drainage and CMLP improvements), Union Street, Willow Street, Fielding Street, Hubbard Street (from Thoreau St. to Union St.), Central Street (from Derby St. to Pine St.) and Riverside Avenue (from Derby St. to Pine St.).  Additionally, the project will also include a mill and overlay treatment on Thoreau Street.  The Roads Program project scope was scaled back in 2011 to ensure appropriate funding for the Monument Street retaining wall.

In addition to the pavement rehabilitation work, the project also included significant water and sewer utility improvements in the Union/Willow/Fielding/Hubbard neighborhood.  All water/sewer improvements were designed in house by the Engineering Division installed by project subcontractor Fenton and Sons.  The Engineering Division continued to provide support throughout the utility construction process through attendance at neighborhood project review meetings, construction conflict resolution and overall engineering guidance. Upon completion of the utility work, the neighborhood’s pavement was reclaimed and fine graded and paved prior to winter shutdown.  Top course pavement installation will be completed within the Spring 2012 to allow for repair of any trench settlement.  The mill and overlay work on Thoreau Street will also be competed at that time.

Reclaim, fine grading and pavement installation was completed on Whittemore Street.  The paving work was coordinated with CMLP improvements of underground work completed earlier in 2011 and water replacement and drainage system improvements completed within 2010.

Lazaro also completed pavement reclamation, fine grading and binder course pavement installation in the Central/Derby/Riverside neighborhood.  Significant drainage improvements were completed within the neighborhood by the Highway Division as an internal project (additional information on the project scope is included within the appropriate section below), so this neighborhood was left at binder course grade for the winter.  Lazaro will return within the Spring of 2012 to install the top course pavement.

2010 Sidewalk Program –
Prior to winter shutdown, contractor Allied Paving has reached substantial completion for all contract work within the 2010 Sidewalk Program.  The initial scope of work included sidewalk rehabilitations on Hill Street, Lapham Road, Ministerial Drive, Upland Road, Sudbury Road,~West Street, Loring Road, Anson Road, Bayberry Road and Deacon Haynes Road and sidewalk extensions on Powder Mill Road and Lowell Road.  Within the fall of 2011, the sidewalk contract scope was increased to include curb ramp installation at the Highland Street/Church Street and Old Marlboro Road/Harrington Avenue intersections as well as work at the intersection of Pine Street and Central Street which included the lowering of the existing sidewalk, installation of new curbing, new ADA compliant curb ramps and reconstruction of approximately 200 feet of sidewalk.  ~

Allied is expected to return within the spring of 2012 to complete remaining punch list items on the Lowell Road sidewalk extension including loam and seed and permanent trench patching.
